South Street offers new and returning students a warm welcome

Welcome sign

We are

  • A welcoming Christian fellowship in which we hope you will quickly feel part of the family.
    • A church with breadth, using hymns, songs and prayers from many different sources.
      • A church committed to knowing Jesus and seeking to discern how we live for him in today's society.
        • A church at the heart of the city centre committed to serving the community around it.

There are opportunities to take an active part in the life and worship of the Church, perhaps through music, taking part in worship or volunteering. Occasionally, we arrange meals or other events for students and encourage church members to invite students home for lunch now and then.

We also offer prayer support, including access to the Church’s Prayer Chain when necessary. South Street Baptist Church is also the home of the Exeter Chinese Christian Fellowship who meet in our building at 1.30 pm on Sunday afternoons.

The University Chaplaincy

One of our ministers, Simon Taylor, is the Free Church Chaplain to Exeter University and part of its multi faith chaplaincy. He has wide experience of student life and is available to offer support and help to university staff and students. You can contact him or find out what he's doing at:

Simon is normally on campus Tuesday to Thursday during term time. Contact him to find out when. As a university chaplain he is also available to staff.

You can find out more about the university chaplaincy at:

Simon is there to listen to your concerns, support you and help ensure that your time at university is positive. He is available to you at times of crisis and is in touch with various support structures within and outside of the university.

Simon works with the Revd Hannah Alderson, the Anglican chaplain, to run an ecumenical and contemplative service in the Mary Harris Memorial Chapel on Streatham campus in term time. This service seeks to provide an inclusive and welcoming space where we can explore the Christian faith and worship together in creative ways. He also supports the Exeter Student Christian Movement group that meets weekly in term time.

  • South Street welcomes students from any country, denomination or background; we hope you will feel at home amongst us.
